Insurance for Farms

Bob:
It’s not every day you wake up with pig. Joining us today is Lucy and her owner, uh, Tara Zandi, good to see you.

Mary:
So let’s talk about farms today and are, are there different categories of farms?

Tara:
Yes. There are tons of categories. Well, first you have your, your to specific the livestock and the crop, but then you do have other small animal farms like bee farms. Um, you have tree farms, you have, there’s an, uh, Alpaca farm in Battle Creek. There’s, there’s tons of different farms.

Bob:
And talking about insurance a little bit because I know you’re kind of representing the Holt Dimondale Insurance Agency. Um, do you have to list all your farming equipment or can you purchase blanket protection?

Tara:
You can do both. Um, I would recommend anything over a certain dollar amount that you list it. I mean, your John Deers for half a million dollars, those are really important to list versus just putting it on a blanket.

Mary:
Right. Let’s talk about, uh, crop sprays. Am I protected if my crop sprays damage my neighbor’s garden?

Tara:
Well, there is a special endorsement you can add. Some policies come with a small amount of coverage, but there is increased coverage for that. Uh, some carriers don’t have that at all, so it just depends on who you’re with and what you got.

Mary:
Right.

Bob:
I want to know more about Lucy.

Tara:
So Lucy is one. Um, she’s an indoor pig. She does have her own room, her own, um, cage inside of her room. She does use the litter box in the winter. We do let her go outside. She’ll let us know when she has to go outside in the summertime.

Bob:
They’re very smart, right?

Tara:
They are very smart. Uh, she is probably smarter than the two dogs that we have at home, actually.

Bob:
I understand that pigs are more intelligent than dogs. I’ve heard that many times.

Tara:
Yes. Fourth smartest animal.

Mary:
Really?

Tara:
Yes.

Mary:
Wow.

Tara:
So, she’s, she’s a great pet. Right now we’re currently trying, I’m trying to talk them into letting me get a second one, but we need more land.

Mary:
Now are they playful?

Tara:
They are. Um, we have a six-year-old that she just plays with all the time. She’ll run back and forth with him and twirl around and do all sorts of things with him. I

Bob:
Is Lucy a special kind of pig? Potbelly or is that different?

Tara:
She’s just a mini pig. I’m not, I’m not sure exactly what breed she is, but we got it from a breeder in Williamston. They, they do the mini pig things, they weren’t, they weren’t really specific on what she was.

Mary:
Right. Well, I know she likes her treats, so I suspect you don’t have to have a vacuum,

Tara:
No, she eats everything.

Bob:
That’s why you need a pig.

Tara:
Her favorite toy is a phone book. We throw a phone book in a room and she just shreds it. And then of course I have to pick her up.

Bob:
That’s hilarious. Does she bite?

Tara:
No, not at all. She does not bite. She only has about 4 teeth.
